Hope + Healthy Smiles
Five local hygienists are making history in a small school in Africa as team Hope + Healthy Smiles. Monica Monsantofils, RDH, BSDH, EPDH, Laura Rentz, RDH, Suzy Jagger, RDH,
Sara Updegraff, RDH, EPDH, and Michelle Turner, RDH (pictured left) are working with EduCongo to create a sustainable dental program in a rural area of Kisanga in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). EduCongo is a non-profit organization promoting education in the DRC, and is responsible for building a school called the Discovery School. The aim of the school is to provide affordable education to children who otherwise may not have enough money to attend. Discovery School’s tuition is one third the rate of other local schools to make that possible. At present, there are 2,060 children that attend the school, and it is growing.
Five years ago, EduCongo built a medical clinic adjacent to the school which serves the community’s health needs. EduCongo has asked team Hope + Healthy Smiles, to come to the school and create a preventive dental program for their blossoming children. Unfortunately, there are no dental services in this country, but these women aim to change that. They are creating a program to train local health care professionals how to give oral hygiene instructions and place fluoride varnish and dental sealants on the children that attend the school and live in the community. Their desire for this sustainable program is that it will be available to other dental professionals to be duplicated. They depart in September for a ten day trip to start the program, and in order to make this trip successful, they are in need of volunteers and donations. You're invited to the Hygienists in Independent Practice Study Club Study club meetings are free!
The field of oral health care is rapidly changing. Expanding access to care is a top priority in the US right now. Hygienists with expanded practice permits are helping one another to learn how to take advantage of this new job opportunity and will ensure that patients around Oregon will have access to preventive oral health care. This study club was started to support these groundbreaking hygienists, to gather our ideas and solve problems collectively.
The club was founded by Christa Olsson, R.D.H. EP, who is currently serving the underserved community of Oakridge, OR from her own clinic!
Any dental hygienist (with or without an Expanded Practice Permit), instructor or dental hygiene student is welcome to attend.
Everyone's questions and experiences are welcome. Experts will be invited to present info at future meetings. Topics will include billing, grants, collaborative care in the medical setting, and more as our interests develop. This study club aims to be an empowering support group for the brave hygienists who are reaching out to the dentally forgotten. We can do this together along with organizations that are helping to increase access to health care.
