The new "Quit Now" cards are designed to be given to patients by RDH's as a motivational aid to begin the process of quitting tobacco. The client/patient should be encouraged to call the 800 #, which will then route that caller to their State's tobacco quit line (i.e. the Oregon Tobacco Quit Line). As a way to both track how people are getting this information, and to increase the public's awareness of the role of dental hygienists as healthcare educators and professionals, hygienists are encouraged to request clients/patients to state that they were given the quit line # by their dental hygienist, when they call the 800 #. That will be the most effective way to semi-track how well these cards are promoting tobacco users to call quit lines. The ADHA's SCI director (Carol Southard) has requested that we strive to monitor how these cards are being distributed and used. If callers state that they are receiving tobacco cessation information from their RDH, and that this card is their source for the quit line #, then that will show that this effort is proving to be successful, and should be continued.

At this ADHA web site, you  can get great information for you and your patients! Such as 'You Can Quit Smoking' quit plans that were developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and can be used to help prepare smokers for their first call to a quit line, and set a quit date.  They are available in multiple languages, some with prenatal specific information.
