Focus on Caries Prevention; Updates in Cariology, Documentation and Minimally Invasive Interventions

Speaker:  Jean Creasey, DDS

Bio: Jean practiced first as a dental hygienist, coordinating a school based dental prevention program for my rural county and working in private practice. Later she earned her DDS from UCSF and studied cariology under Dr. John Featherstone, who introduced her to Caries Management by Risk Assessment. ( CAMBRA). She has lectured regularly on the topic of incorporating CAMBRA into private practice and Motivational interviewing, both nationally and internationally.

She  has practiced in a small group dental practice for over 19 years and has been very involved in community dental health projects, organized dentistry and philanthropic dental care. Within organized dentistry she served on CDA Councils of Policy Development, and chaired both the Government Affairs Council and the CDA Foundation. At the ADA, she served on the Council on Dental Practice and as a long time delegate. She now teaches part time at the University of Pacific-Dugoni School of Dentistry.

She has traveled regularly to southwestern Uganda where she takes small groups of volunteer dentists and physicians to work with the marginalized  Batwa Pygmy population. She is currently helping to develop a dental officer training program at the Bwindi Community Hospital.

Course Description:  Caries management by risk assessment (CAMBRA) is an evidence-based approach to preventing or reversing early stage dental caries. This approach recognizes that restoration alone is not a cure and instead focuses on modifying oral biofilms to favor dental health. Caries protective factors are biologic or therapeutic measures that can be used to prevent or arrest the pathologic challenges posed by various risk factors. Best practices dictate that once the clinician has identified the patient’s caries risk (low, moderate, high or extreme), a therapeutic and/or preventive plan should be implemented. Motivating patients to adhere to recommendations from their dental professionals is also an important aspect in achieving successful outcomes in caries management. Along with fluoride and silver diamine fluoride (SDF), new products are available to assist clinicians with noninvasive management strategies.

This course informs dental professionals about improved caries  prevention strategies, based on scientific evidence for Caries Management by Risk Assessment (CAMBRA). It provides suggestions for the practical implementation of these concepts into clinical practice and strategies for implementing team based, protocol shifts in a private practice setting.  Clinical protocols will be shared that have been developed by experts in the field of cariology, dental practice, academic research and successful practitioners of CAMBRA.

Learning Objectives:

The overall goal of this course is to provide the attendee with information on CAMBRA and best practices in dental caries management. On completion of this course the attendee will be able to do the following:

1. Identify relevant findings and assign an appropriate caries risk status to individual patients.

2. Recognize the value of performing a caries risk assessment on patients in all practice settings.

3. Describe and differentiate between the clinical protocols used to manage various states of dental caries.

4. Identify appropriate dental products available in global markets for patient interventions using CAMBRA principles.
