Sharpening Up Your Skills (Course offered from 9am-11am or from 2pm-4pm)

Speaker: Deborah McGlynn

Bio: Deborah McGlynn has been a practicing dental hygienist since 1981. She taught at Shoreline Community College for 13 years, and she has been a dental hygiene tutor & ergonomics consultant since 2001. She is a member of ADHA.  Deborah McGlynn has served on three dental hygiene advisory committees. And, she has volunteered for two non-profit organizations. One, Smile Island Style, where she volunteered as a practicing hygienist delivering hygiene services to the people of St. Paul Island in Alaska. The other, as a Dental Hygiene Educator for Smiles Forever in Bolivia. Deborah started her own company, DH Cubed, LLC in 2011. Her mission is to provide education and tools for dental hygiene professions that increase skill and efficiency while lowering pain and injury common to the profession.

Course Description:  This is a hands on course! The innovative training curriculum is paired with a unique electronic sharpening guide to hone your sharpening skills. This system is designed specifically for dental hygiene professionals. Please be sure to bring your own sharpening stones, Universal and Gracey curettes that you have personally sharpened and your loupes! Sharp instruments reduce pain!

The number one contributor to hand and wrist pain is dull instruments. Dull instruments require you to apply too much pressure or maintain an unnatural hand and wrist position, both reasons for extreme pain and possible long term injury after a full day of appointments. In this workshop, you will be trained to create the sharpest instruments and maintain that sharpness all through the day, eliminating the main source of pain for hygienists. Sharp instruments lead to less pain, and to providing the best care to your patients!

Course Objectives: 

Understand the science behind sharpening

• Understand the ramifications of not sharpening correctly

• Develop mastery of sharpening

• Learn how to prevent personal injury

• Learn how to use the OneTen Training Method and how to implement it into daily practice


Cultivating Culturally Competent Care


Speaker: Karen Hall, RDH

Bio: Karen Hall received her B.S. in dental hygiene from OHSU in 1985. Since then she has practiced in family practices and community health settings. She has been involved in dental hygiene education as a supervisor for clinical rotations at OHSU and Pacific University. Since 2007, Karen has utilized her expanded practice dental hygiene permit to provide hygiene care to patients with limited access to dental care in many different settings. She was employed by Virginia Garcia Memorial Health Center for 8 years treating pregnant women and children in the clinics, and families through school-based health centers. For 6 years, Karen developed and implemented oral health curriculum programs such as First Tooth through the Oregon Oral Health Coalition. Currently Karen contracts with Capitol Dental Care as an Oral Health Integration Manager primarily in the Outreach program. She also contracts with Dental 3 to provide assessments, education and fluoride varnish to young children in child care settings in the greater Portland area.

Course Description:  As Oregon’s population is increasingly more diverse, it is imperative for dental providers to develop skills in serving patients from varying population groups. Using popular education activities, attendees will explore and discuss methods to improve cultural sensitivity and communication with patients from diverse backgrounds. By implementing the four C’s for cultivating culturally competent care, attendees will gain confidence to use these skills in practice.

Course Objectives: 

• Recognize how Oregon’s population is becoming more diverse

• List 8 factors which influence culture

• Identify four alternative oral health practices to heal oral diseases

• Practice communicating cultural sensitivity


Love is a Battlefield: The Ergonomic Woes of an RDH


Speaker: DeeAnne Ashcroft, MPH, RDHEP

Bio: With 44 years in the field, DeeAnne has had the opportunity to develop expert clinical skills in a broad range of clinical practice settings, including General Practice, Prosthodontics and six years of clinical practice in periodontal specialty settings. From 2008-2015, DeeAnne achieved one of her lifetime career goals when she became Dental Hygiene Program Director for Carrington College-Portland. In addition to administrative duties, DeeAnne enjoyed teaching the didactic courses of General and Oral Pathology, Community Dental Health, Dental Specialties, Scientific Methods, and Radiology and PreClinic. DeeAnne now provides temp coverage for clinical dental hygiene and has enthusiastically embraced her most recent role with Young Innovations, as a Clinical Educator

Course Description:  Ergonomics play a key role in a clinician's safety inside and outside the operatory. "Love is a battlefield" will review common workplace injuries associated with the dental environment and what clinicians can do to increase career longevity through movement. New techniques, including integrating technology can be implemented immediately into the practice setting.

Course Objectives: 

• Review the dental environment including risks and common injuries

• Recognize techniques to prevent injury inside and outside the operatory

• Introduce technology to enhance ergonomic safety and career longevity such as seating, magnification, instruments, dental hygiene hand-piece and workplace

• Discover new-to-market devices that assist in enhancing clinician comfort and safety

Course Description:  Clinicians go through their day-to-day routine on auto-pilot sometimes, but when it comes to infection Control, we must be more active in each step. Not only does staying up-to-date keep our treatment rooms and instruments properly sanitized and sterilized, but also safe for ourselves and our patients.

Course Objectives: 

• Recognize the importance of treatment room and equipment sanitization based on OSHA and CDC recommendations

• Gain confidence in instrument and hand-piece reprocessing procedures

• Refresh on proper hand hygiene and gloving

• Review EPA guidelines and upcoming changes for 2020

• Learn about going green in dental environment
