Dental Hygiene Students And Graduates Who Are Not Licensed May Perform Clinical Procedures In Continuing Education Courses

In 2009 House Bill 3204 amended the Oregon Dental Practice Act by adding that dental hygiene students or graduates of dental hygiene programs may engage in clinical studies as part of a course of study or continuing education course offered by an institution with a dental or dental hygiene program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation. Passage of this bill makes it legal for students or graduates of dental hygiene programs who are not licensed to provide patient care as participants in clinical remediation programs, local anesthesia continuing education courses, etc. This bill was introduced at the request of the Oregon Dental Hygienists’ Association and the Oregon Rural Health Association.
