Dental Therapist Bill Introduced, But Not Passed

In 2011 Senate Bill 227 was introduced at the request of the Oregon Oral Health Coalition. The intent of this bill was to amend the Oregon Dental Practice Act to create a dental therapist certificate for dental hygienists who completed a dental therapist education program approved by the Oregon Board of Dentistry. This bill did not pass, but led to mediation between the Oregon Oral Health Coalition and the Oregon Dental Association that resulted in the passage of Senate Bill 738. This bill included a provision for dental pilot programs that could develop new categories of dental personnel such as a dental therapist.
