ODHA Zoom Meeting

Due recent news of COVID- 19 and advice of limiting travel and gatherings, this class will be a Zoom meeting. The Zoom link and presentation materials will be sent on Monday, March 30, so please register to receive the necessary infomation. We will be moderating a chat online and attendance will be taken so that CE credits can be issued. 

 The ODHA NW Component Presents Two Student Capstone Projects


Capstone 1 Title: Kava as a Natural Remedy for Dental Anxiety

Speakers: Sippara Birri and Kimberly Selby

Course Description: Kava is an herb that has been used for centuries as a remedy for many different conditions, including anxiety. Recent human clinical trials have proven the anxiolytic and antidepressant efficacy of kava extract, and we will be discussing whether or not it would be an effective option to alleviate dental anxiety. 

Course Objectives:

  • Assess the effectiveness and safety of Kava extract for treating dental anxiety
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using Kava
  • Dosage and directions for use
  • Address if Kava is a better tool for dental anxiety compared to traditional methods such as benzodiazepines and nitrous oxide


Capstone 2 Title: Endocannabinoid System and the Oral Cavity

Speakers: Soze Jabbary and Mackenzie Miller

Course Description: This course provides information for oral health professionals regarding the growing prevalence and use of CBD products. It discusses topics that dental professionals should be aware of when treating a patient who uses these products. We also discuss the research that has been done on CBD use in the oral cavity and its potential for future use in dentistry with further research.

Course Objectives:

  • Identify the prevalence of CBD use in the community and what it is used for
  • List the variety of forms that is consumed
  • Have a basic knowledge of the endocannabinoid system and its systemic effects
  • Decipher between quality products and unsafe products
  • Be familiarized with recommended dosage
  • Identify potential interactions of CBD and other drugs
  • Understand what steps need to be taken to move forward in the research of CBD to demonstrate it’s efficacy and the potential use in patient care
  • Understand how dental professionals can utilize this information in patient care
